The Cabildo of Lanzarote and the IPNA are working on the future Canary Islands Atmospheric Observatory

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo: "Lanzarote will promote this observatory that will allow to study the reduction of gases to increase the quality of the air in the Islands".

The president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, met with the highest representative of the Spanish National Research Council in the Canary Islands and director of the Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology, Manuel Nogales and the scientist Sergio Rodríguez, to sign a framework agreement for collaboration between the two parties and to start shaping the Atmospheric Observatory that will benefit the whole of the Canary Islands.

According to the president "it is very important to deal with the reduction of gases and increase the quality of the air; in this sense Lanzarote has, according to the scientists, the best location in the Canary Islands to evaluate the consequences on our health". At the meeting, which took place at the Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology of the CSIC in La Laguna (Tenerife), the importance of implementing control mechanisms to increase this air quality was discussed. In this way, Lanzarote becomes the driving force behind an Atmospheric Observatory that evaluates air currents and particles. "This is the first time that a president of the Cabildo has met with us to discuss a subject of vital importance for the Canaries," said Nogales, thanking the president. "Without a doubt, it says a lot about the interest in the health of the citizens and their concern about climate change".

The proposal of the Cabildo of Lanzarote of the Observatory was transferred in October to the Government of the Canary Islands, which responded with a funding of 250,000 euros to implement it. The Canary Islands Atmospheric Observatory will define the actions to be taken by the Canary Islands Government to combat the effects of global warming on the archipelago. Its creation allows the Canary Islands to be integrated into the World Network of Observatories and into public and private, social and scientific bodies dedicated to the fight against climate change, as well as providing incentives for the implementation of this type of body in the Macaronesian area.
