Cabildo de Tenerife - Knowledge Transfer Plan

The Cabildo Insular de Tenerife supports the IPNA's research work with the creation of a Knowledge Transfer Plan specifically designed for the centre. This initiative is part of the Tenerife 2030 strategy and is financed by the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN) within the Strategic Framework for Island Development (MEDI).

The main objective of this Plan is to bring the scientific capacities as well as the technological achievements developed in the centre closer to all socio-economic sectors, mainly on a regional scale (companies, universities, public administration, etc.), in order to transform research into social and economic welfare.

GESTBIOISLAS

This project of scientific knowledge transfer is focused on improving and contributing to the management of biodiversity on the island of Tenerife, a responsibility of the Cabildo. In particular, the proposed actions are aimed at the conservation of threatened species, in a context of accelerating global and local environmental change.

INVASISLAS

The main aim of this project is to refine the management of invasive species on Tenerife by expanding and disseminating the scientific knowledge accumulated by the IPNA’s Ecology and Evolution on Islands Group, focusing on its applications and aimed at the solution of concrete problems arising from this difficult challenge.

TRANSALUDAGRO

Its main objective is the development of results of commercial interest that are transferable to local businesses or international companies active in medical chemistry and sustainable agriculture. In the first case, valuable natural products are extracted from plant and marine sources after bioprospection, then identified, characterized and developed through sustainable chemical synthesis or biotechnological processes. Secondly, some of these natural products and other simpler substances are studied and tested as inducers of natural resistance in agricultural plants, whether to pathogens or to abiotic stresses such as drought or salinity.

CIGUATOX

The project is focused on the development of a vaccine against ciguatera. As is well known, ciguatera is an intoxication caused by the consumption of fish contaminated by ciguatoxin. This poisoning presents a very characteristic clinical picture but susceptible to being confused with other diseases, which makes its detection late. Also, to date there is no possible treatment against it. The fact of being able to use the human body's defence systems to generate antibodies against this toxin would be a great advance in the field of health, especially when to date there is no possible treatment.

IMMUNOWINE

The objective of the project is the development of a test that would allow to know in a fast and precise way the different species of microorganisms present in each step of the fermentative process of the wine. The use of this technique would allow any winery to carry out its own analyses in an automated way, speeding up the work during the winemaking process, where the decision making depends on the results of these analyses, being the time of obtaining them a key point to avoid the deterioration of the wine and the losses it would entail.

These three keynote actions, together with others implemented by the IPNA in the area of innovation, are backed up by the essential support of the TRANSFERSCIENCENGLISH project developed and maintained by the experienced scientific proof-reader, editor and translator, Guido Vaughan Jones. This pioneering activity, ahead of other CSIC centres, aims to improve the visibility and impact of the scientific-technological research of IPNA in Tenerife on an international level, through the publication of articles in competitive scientific and business journals and other specific dissemination and directed outreach regarding the above projects, also via the website and social network of the centre.
